Ditch the Plastic and Switch to Reusable Shopping Bags

Plastic waste is sucking the life out of our Earth.  Plastic bags can be found everywhere littering our oceans, parks, streets, and packing landfills.  They pose serious harm to wildlife, marine life, humans and our ecosystem as a whole.  Most plastic bags are not biodegradable and take years to break down.

Many stores are trying to reduce the usage of plastic bags by charging for them and encouraging customers to bring their own bags.  Although plastic bags are handy and unfortunately readily available, we must make a change.  They are one of the most common forms of litter.

Using reusable shopping bags will drastically reduce plastic bag pollution.  Thankfully more and more people are adopting this trend.  I have switched and the first thing I have noticed is the reduced clutter under my sink where I used to store them.  I found great reusable totes from Effort’s Eco-Essentials.  They are made of biodegradable hemp and organic cotton and are ideal for my everyday shopping.  The sturdy bags hold a ton of groceries thanks to their solid stitching.  There is a separate storage pouch inside that I can throw my keys, phone and wallet in.  I use these totes when I go grocery shopping, to the mall and even as a beach bag when on vacation.

Efforts Eco-Essentials | Ditch the Plastic and Switch to Reusable Shopping Bags

I have machine washed mine many times and they are holding up fabulously.  I like how there is an option for natural or black.   I always grab the black one when I’m hitting the mall; I just feel more stylish!  I must admit that it took me a few shopping trips to remember to bring them.  But once I got into the habit of unloading their contents and then throwing them immediately back into the car for my next trip, it was no longer an issue.  They fold up nicely and take up little room in my car.  I also find they are much more durable than plastic and it is easier to carry my heavy groceries into the house because of the handles.  They hold much more than a standard grocery bag so that means fewer trips from the car to the house!

As I stated in an earlier blog, I started the year making a conscious effort to be more eco-friendly.  I feel good every time I use these reusable bags and realize I am doing my part to cut down on the plastic pollution that is so damaging to our planet.
