Every small change we make to live a more eco-friendly life is a one step closer to saving our planet. As we become more aware of our earth’s issues, more people are willing to make changes to their lifestyles to help.
Here are ten small changes that you can make in your everyday life to live a greener life.
1. Turn Off The Water
It is easy to reduce our water consumption. Turn off the water while you are brushing your teeth or washing dishes. Take shorter showers. Only run your dishwasher when it’s full. Fix dripping taps.
2. Reduce Plastic Use
It is incredible the amount of plastic that we throw away that ends up in landfills and our oceans. An easy way to decrease plastic use is to buy stainless steel drinking straws and a reusable water bottle. Bring reusable bags to the grocery store. Buy your fruits and veggies loose instead of in plastic bags. Simple!
3. Eat Less Meat
Cutting down on the amount of meat and dairy we eat can have a huge impact on the environment. Reducing our red meat consumption can have a significant impact on our carbon footprint. Raising livestock takes a lot of land and water, both of which are becoming scarce. As well, animal waste produces methane gases which pollutes our water, air and soil. Start by trying Meatless Mondays.
4. Go Paperless
Going paperless can make a huge difference in the amount of paper being used. Unsubscribe from catalogues, newspapers and magazines (most information is on line now), and choose paperless billing when available.
5. Switch To LED Light Bulbs
LED bulbs are much more efficient and last longer. You’ll use less power and have to change your bulbs less frequently.
6. Think Twice When Purchasing Clothing
Cheap clothing has a big cost to our planet. Synthetic materials such as polyester are terrible for our environment. One of the main reasons is that every time a garment is washed it releases tiny microplastic fibres into our water. Consider switching to more eco-friendly options such as hemp and bamboo clothing. Both plants are rapidly renewable, require less water than other plants and use less pesticides to grow. I made the switch recently. My go-to outfit is my breathable bamboo leggings paired with a hemp ¾ sleeve fluid top from my favourite eco-friendly clothing line Efforts Eco-Essentials.
7. Use Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products
Most cleaning products have chemicals in them that can harm our environment and our health. Choose green cleaning products that are less harmful. When possible I use plain white vinegar. It’s natural and non-toxic.
8. Recycle Everything
Most of us already recycle but is there more that you can do? Do a little research before disposing an item. Check with this handy site https://www.recyclenow.com/recycling-knowledge/recycling-around-your-home
9. Unplug
Appliances, computers, lamps. Everything that is plugged in still uses energy even when not in use. Save yourself some money and unplug!
10. Use More Rags And Less Paper Towel
This is a good way to recycle your old clothing. Cut up old t-shirts and use as rags to clean up around the house. Washable and reusable, you’ll cut down on paper towel use and save our trees!
These are just 10 simple ways that you can live more eco-friendly and have an impact on our planet. Imagine if everyone made these small, simple changes!
